Visual Impairment Program

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District provides regionalized services for students who have a visual impairment. These services are provided to all member Districts. 
 
The Visual Impairment Specialist provides specialized instruction and services required to meet the unique educational needs of students with visual impairments. The Specialist assists the student and others to understand the needs and learning characteristics of students with a visual impairment, orders specialized materials and equipment, provides direct and consultative instruction, maximizes the student's participation in the least restrictive environment, supports access to the general education curriculum and environment, and implements needed accommodations and modifications to the students curriculum and learning environment. 
 
The Orientation and Mobility Specialist teaches students to travel with proficiency, safety, and confidence in familiar and unfamiliar environments. The Specialist focuses on the development of skills and knowledge to enable the student to travel independently. 
 
The Visual Impairment Program also provides braille transcription for students requiring this service.
